Abstract

How much do you know about gynaecological wellness? Topics surrounding the female vagina can cause embarrassment and discomfort for many young women. As a result, discussions and awareness of gynaecological issues can be challenging for them.  It was also found that gynaecology wellness is not addressed in Singapore’s school curriculum. There is generally an insufficient open educational platform for young women to equip themselves with knowledge to take charge of their gynaecological health.

This project thus aims to design a range of educational materials for Singaporean females age 13-25 years old to raise awareness of symptoms, detection and prevention methods of various intimate female hygiene and gynaecological issues. The project hopes to promote open conversations about female-specific medical conditions in Singapore and provide accessible resources.

Project Rationale

This project was first motivated by the designer's personal experience. As a young female in Singapore, the school did not teach gender-specific conditions or hygiene tips. The designer was never provided with the information until she encountered gynaecological issues and only got to learn more about it after consulting health professionals. In Singapore, reproductive concerns, sexual health and gynaecological cancers are more commonly addressed. However, common gynaecological conditions such as Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), Vaginitis, Dysmenorrhea that could lead to serious gynaecological conditions are often neglected.

Design Process

Initially, the deliverables are planned more towards physical educational materials such as booklets, diagrams and card games. As the project envisioned the outcome to be used in both classrooms and home settings for educators to teach the students as well as parents to teach their daughters. However, after much consideration in regards to the current trends of advancement in technology usage, the deliverables have shifted to be more digitalized. Moving all information and diagram activities all in one app, as well as creating motion graphics video. The character design has also changed along the way as some of the initial drafts might look too kiddish or unrelatable to local audiences. Therefore, the idea of multi-racial character design was included too.

The design direction is formed through the designer's personal interpretation of what is gynaecological wellness education to her. The designer wanted the style to be fluid, curvy, calm and organic looking. This portrays a softer, gentler and feminine look. The character design should look simple yet approachable so that it is easily understandable and resonates better with the younger targeted female audiences. While the colour scheme is positive and vibrant. This helps to lift up the tone, portraying a more fun and positive outlook so as to better engage younger female target audiences as the project is touching on a serious, sensitive topic.

How does it work?
Teachers or parents can briefly explain some key gynaecological information through the app from their iPad or projector. The diagram matching activity of the terms to their anatomy parts is included in the app for interactive teaching elements. Moving on, the short animated clip can be played to supplement the app’s teaching materials. After the teaching part, students can split up into groups to play the card games to recap and apply what they have learned.
