Overview:

Selflov, a self-help and self-monitoring app that helps local young females in gaining knowledge and raise awareness regarding dating violence. It is designed to help individuals in a relationship to monitor their daily mood. It also serves as an educational and support platform whereby users are able to obtain information about dating violence and seek help at necessary hotlines and organizations.

This is a school project and the brief is to tackle on a social issue. Therefore, I have chosen this topic - dating violence. I felt that violence in marriage(domestic violence) is more commonly addressed while dating violence is often neglected. It is important for young women to be aware of toxic relationships at a young age so as to prevent them from making the wrong decisions and leading to greater consequences later on in life such as domestic violence.

Background

CONTEXT :

There is an increasing trend of dating violence. Many were unaware that unmarried woman faces the same violence as domestic violence. It is dangerous as they are not protected by Singapore law.
.

OBJECTIVES :

Aims to inform and gain more awareness so as to improve the situation and help the people around us that encounter dating violence.

Topics surrounding dating violence were often neglected. More focus was placed on domestic/marriage violence and many young women were unaware of what is dating violence despite being involved in one. As younger generations are starting to date earlier, it is important to discuss and raise awareness of dating violence issues so that they could better protect themselves from becoming a victim.

This project thus aims to design a self-help and self-monitoring app for Singapore’s young females to raise awareness of red flags, providing knowledge and support for dating violence issues. The project hopes to promote young women to be equipped with self-awareness in Singapore and provide accessible resources.

Understanding The Problem

News and research studies have reported serious effects of abusive relationships, victims tend to stay in such unhealthy relationships as it is hard for them to leave and some were unaware that they are in one. Most of the times, it is difficult to spot an abusive relationship as they are not always shown through physical means. Abusive relationships consist of psychological, emotional, verbal and sexual abuse as well. However, not much focus is being brought to this topic.

After much research and conducting of survey, here are the gaps found:
a) Currently, there is n
o Singapore law that protects unmarried women from dating violence.

b) Many respondents had been/are involved in an abusive relationship, but were unaware of it.
c) 1 in 3 respondents choose to not seek help and would rather resolve the issues by themselves should they face an abusive relationship.

2. Resources
The app needs to provide sufficient tips and resources regarding dating violence to increase awareness and knowledge.

3. Help & Support

UI/UX and Visual Design Prototype

Style Visual Directions:
The overall app has a soft pastel colour and a flowy look to portray a calm and intimate feeling while using the app. The app is a self-help and self-monitoring app, therefore it should allow users to feel close and comfortable while using it. Rounded fonts were used to further bring out a sense of friendliness and approachability.

Takeaways

In this project, I have learned to do primary research such as surveys to better understand the issues from a first person perspective, identify problems and needs that is required to be addressed.
